Two Different Books On GIS Suit Beginners and Non-Technical Executives Very Well (01jun97)

GIS: A Visual Approach, by Bruce Davis

These two books explain different aspects of geographic information systems (GIS), but both do a great job of explaining GIS without requiring readers to have a technical background. The GIS Book, 4th Edition explains the core basics of the technology but spends most of its time covering other major factors that really make or break a GIS implementation. This is the book for executives, managers, and users that want the big picture with relevant details and guidelines.

GIS: A Visual Approach, primarily focuses on explaining the technology without jargon and with many diagrams and pictures. The author wrote the book in a way that even non-native English speakers should pick up the technical fundamentals without much trouble. Many of the diagrams and pictures are supplied on accompanying diskettes for computer display, printing, or slide making. While this book is an excellent GIS primer, we feel that it contains information that many of our readers will consider too basic. Therefore, we will concentrate on the other book in this article.

The GIS Book, 4th Edition

This new edition "was written for people who want to know about the selection, implementation, uses, and benefits of GIS, but don’t need to know all of the technical details of how GIS actually works," according to author George Korte, P.E.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part explains the fundamentals of the technology, what can be done with it, and an overview of the GIS industry. The diagrams and pictures included in this section are enough to establish a very basic idea of how CAD, AM/FM, and GIS differ.

The second part provides some very helpful guidance in selecting and implementing a GIS. The step-by-step implementation process diagram is worth the price of the book alone for those getting started. This section also reviews four leading GIS software vendors (ESRI, Intergraph, Landmark Graphics, and MapInfo) using their sales literature minus unsubstantiated claims. No comparisons or evaluations were given but it quickly demonstrated the different competencies of the vendors. Besides, the author happens to work for Intergraph.

The third part reviews key factors about GIS such as financial justification, legal aspects, economics of base map accuracy, and getting CAD data into a GIS. Several case studies are provided as well. The details provided were both interesting and useful.

Some of the more notable points from the book were:

  • A GIS program is neither a small nor simple undertaking (it is very different from selecting a CAD package for a design group).
  • It is far more critical to determine your organization’s needs (not just a department’s needs) for the GIS and decide which GIS package fits this best than it is to determine how the different systems compare each other.
  • The cost of data conversion can range between 60 and 80 percent of the total cost of implementing a GIS. The two most overlooked factors are completing the data entered and checking/correcting it once the data is in the system.
  • Consider teaming up with other companies or organizations in your area to share the cost of creating the GIS database.
  • The root problem for unsatisfactory GIS programs is usually oraganizational and operational issues, not the hardware, software, or a vendor.

We found several small mistakes regarding computer technology in the GIS Book, but these were not critical to its explanation of GIS.

Visio Enters GIS Market With Visio Maps Add-On (01jun97)

It seems that everybody and his brother is realizing that there is big money to be made in the burgeoning GIS marketplace and a constant stream of products keeps emerging. Some of these GIS products are "light" versions of bigger, monolithic products, while others have been a little too "light" and hardly worth the time, effort, or money to try and learn.

The reason that so many players have tried to enter the GIS playing field, of course, is money. For example, market research firm, Daratech, projects that in 1999, the worldwide GIS software market for all applications running on all platforms will exceed $1.5 billion. Dataquest, another market research firm expects sales of just GIS business applications will exceed $190 million by 1999.

While it is not difficult to understand why Visio is attempting to break into GIS, it is hard to really categorize what Visio has done with its new product, Visio Maps, but at first glance (we looked at a pre-beta version), they seem to have done many things right for getting real GIS technology into the hands of a potentially much bigger business customer base.

Partnering with ESRI

In no small undertaking, Visio has partnered with Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) as an integral part of the overall Visio Maps strategy.

With help from ESRI, Visio Maps was designed to work in conjunction with and be compatible with ArcView. Organizations that use ArcView will be able to extend the usefulness of their maps by saving their project information in a format specifically designed to be read by Visio Maps.

We have wondered for some time if ESRI would ever be amenable to a GIS product suited for a much larger potential market; and they have now shown that they are. We feel that these technology and business moves are good ones that will benefit both Visio and ESRI.

How It Works

Visio Maps is an add-on product that runs on top of any of the company’s other core products — Visio Standard, Visio Professional, or Visio Technical.

Of course, users can’t expect Visio Maps to be as comprehensive as ESRI GIS products. Visio Maps extends the Visio product line so users can visualize their business information, showing geographic relationships and trends. It employs the same interface and drag-and-drop metaphor for creating and sharing maps and other geographic data.

Major Visio Maps Features

Because so much research was conducted before Visio Maps was actually created, it contains features that other vendors are likely to take notice of and "mimic." Some of the more prominent features include:

New SmartShapes Symbols - Visio Maps comes with more than 120 mapping-specific symbols of Visio’s trademark SmartShapes for creating and annotating maps.

Geographic Mapping Features - These include thematic rendering for more effectively presenting thematic maps; address matching to street level for pinpointing location information; find by location for zooming in and highlighting a specified location or feature; and spatial selection tools for querying data associated with a selected boundary.

Data Sets - A wide range of geographic-boundary and demographic data, such streets, rivers, cities, key landmarks, and population for use in creating thematic maps.

Wizards - Visio Maps Wizards help users step through the creation and use of data-driven maps in such a way that they don’t have to be database or GIS experts.

ESRI/ArcView Data Compatibility - ArcView users can extend the utility of their maps by saving their project information in a format specifically designed to be read by Visio Maps. Visio Maps also will read any standard ESRI Shapefile format data and import ArcView map projection information.

Lastly, because users will be able to see geographic trends in their business data, they can join this data to and from Microsoft Access, Excel, FoxPro, or dBase to geographic data included in Visio Maps.

Good Odds For Hitting Target Customers

Before creating Visio Maps, the company did extensive market research and discovered that users had specific needs for a desktop mapping application, regardless of industry or vertical market. These criteria were then transformed into the design goals for Visio Maps. With this in mind, Visio realized that its Maps product would have to provide the following:

  • A fast and easy way to create and publish maps
  • Flexible annotation capabilities to enhance maps for presentations
  • Easy-to-use and consistent interface
  • Compatibility with higher-end GIS software
  • Customizable for specific needs and market segments
  • Affordable and easy to learn

Visio realizes, and rightly so, that potential users of Visio Maps are diverse and span many industries, so the customer profile takes aim at basically two groups:

  • Current users of Visio who are already familiar with the interface, features, and capabilities. Since the company estimates that 70 percent of all business information generated today contains some type of geographic data, the more than one million current users of Visio will potentially discover new ways for creating, incorporating, and sharing maps.
  • Adjacent ESRI ArcView users who work with, but generally do not create, ArcView maps because of the high cost of acquiring and training associated with ArcView. These more casual users are not GIS professionals, but they need to view geographic data to perform tasks, such as how to optimize sales territories, where to stage promotions, what customers to target, where competitors are located, etc.

Visio’s partnership with ESRI helps ensure that Visio Maps users have access to the same data as GIS specialists using the ESRI products.

Requirements/Cost/Availability

Visio Maps requires Visio 4.0c or later, Windows 95 or NT 4.0, and a CD-ROM drive. It comes on three CD-ROMs and includes the product, demographic data from ESRI, and other assorted goodies. The US street price for the Visio Maps add-on is $199. Bundled pricing is available when Visio Maps is purchased with a Visio application. As we went to press, the only bundle price we could get was Visio Maps bundled with Visio Standard, which is priced at $299. Visio Maps will begin shipping in July and will be generally available in August from corporate resellers, distributors, retail channels, and directly from Visio and ESRI.

We will keep a close eye on this product and will review a shipping version of Visio Maps and publish our findings either later this summer or early fall.

It’s Show Time! (01may97)

The A/E/C Systems conference and exhibition is this industry’s showcase event for the technologies, products, and personalities that are shaping it today and propelling it toward the future. Historically, the A/E/C Systems show has been the launch venue for a number of very prominent products over the years, and this year will probably prove this true once again.

We are looking forward to attending A/E/C Systems this month in Philadelphia scheduled for June 16-19. This year’s event is expected to draw more than 25,000 attendees and between 400 and 500 exhibitors. This show can be a grueling ordeal, just based on the sheer number of vendors and products, but it does let us see most of the major AEC and GIS players under one roof for objectively evaluating their offerings.

We strongly encourage you to also consider attending so you can evaluate the products and question the vendors as an informed potential buyer, because one product does not a comparison make. To really get a good feel for what different products can really do, you have to see them operate with the same data, constraints, or parameters (all preferably yours) side by side on a level playing field.

Beware, though, that just about any vendor worth its salt can make its product look good -- especially if it’s the only one being evaluated and "verbally compared." Even in this verbal comparison, you must be ready to spar with the tough questions. Try to be defensive and objective, because many vendors will tend toward being offensive and subjective about their products, especially when pressed how their products stack up against the competition.

As much as we would like to think otherwise, and as much as vendors would like you to think otherwise, all software products, AEC or otherwise, are not created equally. Since this is a market that is in a seemingly constant state of flux, many customers often approach vendors with a certain air of skepticism and uncertainty. Unfortunately, these feelings all too often play into the hands of unscrupulous sales people who try to assure potential customers that only they have the solution that the customer before them is seeking. In effect, this all too often opens the door to snake oil marketing ploys by vendors. Of course, it’s always the "other" vendor’s direct sales people and VARs who are at fault as the snake oil purveyors. Surprisingly, though, it is often those finding fault with other vendors that fail to support the claims they are making for their own products.

So, then why does the best product often have few takers? Sadly, in this industry, as in virtually all others, it’s often not the content of the product that sells, but the packaging. Once again, it is not a case of who has the best product, but rather who does the greatest volume and better job of splashy, memorable marketing that comes out the winner in the product sales game.

Trimble Introduces New Technology, Product, and Relationship (01apr97)

Trimble Navigation Limited (Sunnyvale, CA) recently made several announcements concerning aspects of its business on many fronts—a new real-time GPS technology, a new reference station for highly accurate GPS measurements, and a new GPS chipset agreement.

Trimble’s new real-time Everest Multipath Rejection technology for its 4000 Series GPS receivers is an advancement in multipath signal mitigation. This technology increases survey productivity, especially in high multipath environments such as near buildings, mine walls, vehicles, trees, water, or other reflective surfaces. Everest technology extends real-time GPS surveying to many sites that were not previously viable due to multipath interference. Its GPS signal processing algorithms reject error inducing multipath signals before satellite range determinations are performed.

The new technology provides significant improvements in real-time kinematic (RTK) automatic initialization performance. Productivity gains are realized in the speed at which surveying can begin or the speed at which the system will re-initialize after a loss of satellite signal lock. Difficult initializations that previously took a long time due to multipath interference are now performed much faster.

In addition, overall initialization reliability exceeds 99.9%, which means that surveyors can be assured of the accuracy of their results, even in difficult environments. Improvements in real-time differential GPS (DGPS) accuracy is another significant benefit of Everest. The real-time DGPS accuracy of 4000 Series receivers are improved by a factor of two, with accuracies of 1 to 2 decimeters now possible. This accuracy is especially beneficial for GIS mapping and marine applications.

Trimble Introduces New Reference Station for High-Accuracy GPS Measurements

Trimble recently introduced a continuously operating reference station (CORS) system for permanent GPS base station installations. The CORS system is well-suited for accurate land surveying/GIS mapping base station operations or scientific research applications.

The system includes the 4000SSi CORS receiver combined with a Trimble choke ring antenna and PC-based reference station software. The GPS measurements made with the Trimble CORS system can then be made available for private or public access via an electronic bulletin board service or the Internet. Customized options also allow users to add survey outputs for real-time sub-meter or real-time centimeter positioning via radio links to roving GPS receivers.

PC-based reference station software provides operational control for the CORS system by logging raw GPS data—including pseudo ranges, carrier phase, and ephemeris data from all satellites in view—direct to a PC. Data files can be automatically converted to a standard format for general distribution and used for surveying, mapping and scientific applications. A multitasking version of the reference station system includes a dial-up bulletin board service allowing one or more remote users to simultaneously obtain GPS data for post-processing while GPS data continues to be stored to the PC’s hard disk at the reference station.

Trimble Signs Chipset Agreement

Trimble and Xanavi Informatics Corp. (Kanagawa, Japan) have signed a GPS chipset agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Trimble will grant Xanavi access to its GPS chipset for use in its in-vehicle navigation systems for an undisclosed royalty.

The agreement completes Xanavi’s transition from a board-level GPS engine customer to a volume user of Trimble’s Sierra GPS Chipset, a second generation commercial architecture especially effective in "urban canyons."

Xanavi Informatics Corp. was established in 1991 by Hitachi and the Nissan Motor Co. Xanavi operates as a developer, producer, and marketer of a wide range of integrated automobile information and communication systems. Xanavi’s Birdview car navigation and information system uses GPS satellite technology and the most up-to-date GIS mapping information available for urban and out-of-town road networks. Birdview lets drivers know where they are on a moving map for efficiently reaching a destination.

Beyond Xanavi, Trimble now has significant car navigation alliances with companies worldwide, including Pioneer Electronics, Philips Car Systems, TECmobility, Delco Electronics, and Intel Corp.

Trimble’s chipset agreement with Xanavi Informatics is the latest in a series of agreements placing Trimble in the fastest-growing sector of the GPS industry. According to the US GPS Industry Council, car navigation will grow from $310 million in 1995 to $3 billion by 2000. The Council further estimates that the GPS industry as a whole will grow to over $8 billion by the year 2000. By these same industry estimates, Trimble has approximately 30% of the worldwide market for GPS engines at the heart of car navigation systems.

Trimble Issued 100th Patent

In a related matter, Trimble recently announced that it has been issued its 100th patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office for its Centimeter Accurate GPS Receiver for On-the-Fly Real-Time Kinematic Measurement and Control. This technique, an advance in GPS positioning, increases survey productivity by performing accurate surveys dynamically on the move, and in real-time.

Trimble was issued its first patent in 1988 and holds more US patents on GPS and related technology than any other organization.

Intergraph’s Vision Worldwide Symposium (01apr97)

In late February, approximately 150 AM/FM/GIS executives spent two days in central Florida at an event sponsored by Intergraph Corp. called the Vision Worldwide Symposium—another in the series of Intergraph’s "Vision" Symposia. This "by invitation only" event was an intensive two-day forum for executives of the utility and telecommunications industries, and leading information technology (IT) vendors. Overall, the Symposium was used by all parties involved as a forum for sharing ideas and strategies that empower the enterprise, enabling it to be more competitive.

Tommy Steele, president of Intergraph Software Solutions (ISS) presented Intergraph’s Utility and Telecom Vision. Jim Meadlock, Intergraph’s chairman and CEO, discussed the Internet and technology trends. In addition, executives from Microsoft, Intel, Oracle, and SAP presented their respective views of applicable technologies for the near- and mid-term future.

Collectively, all of these vendor presentations mixed well with presentations from end users on real-world working projects. As examples, executives from Kansas City Power & Light, and Texas Utilities presented very interesting material about their projects. Other projects discussed included those by Future Horizons, Mountain Fuel Supply, El Paso Energy, Continental Cablevision, and Central & Southwest.

Detroit Edison presented an excellent demonstration entitled, "Taking Advantage of the Web," where we heard the term enterprise-WISE (Wide Information System Environment) used for the first time.

Several of the speakers throughout the course of the Symposium stressed that now is the time for GIS or AM/FM/GIS to be implemented in the mainstream as an integral part of enterprise-wide IT solutions.

The Symposium’s recurring theme was the acceleration and seemingly increasing scarcity of time. Where paybacks previously were measured in terms of years, today, many payback periods are measured in terms of weeks, and even sometimes days. All utilities must make a commitment to technology leadership, production, and implementation. If they are to survive, utilities must become "best of breed" organizations to keep pace with computing hardware systems that are doubling in performance approximately every 18 months.

Several utilities made it clear that they wanted to be recognized as the best. Without exception, these organizations with high aspirations had clear visions of their end products and had or in the process of re-engineering to reach their product goal. These same organizations plan to continue to provide their enterprises with leading-edge technologies. They also plan to enjoy the benefits of these new technologies early, and say they have no time to wait for implementing these technologies. One executive said, "Sooner is better than better."

Some of the forces driving the utilities to accelerate their implementation of new technologies include restructuring, competition; increased customer expectations; ability to adapt and change rapidly; posturing for deregulation; and the necessity of establishing and maintaining strong industry partnerships.

This latest Vision Symposium was right on target in the way it discussed the world that utilities live in today, while discussing how they will survive and prosper in the future. It’s discussions like these found at the Vision Symposium that keep us all abreast of fast evolving technologies and their place in the world of utilities.n

Autodesk World—A New, Different GIS Product For New, Different Users (01apr07)

To many people, a Geographic Information System (GIS) remains a foreign concept. Traditionally, GIS has been used in a CAD-like environment by specialists, and it has also been saddled with complex products and proprietary data. This is changing, though, to include users far beyond traditional GIS specialists for using capable GIS products—casual, part-time users. This emerging group of users wants products that don’t necessarily have to sit atop a CAD engine for accessing the huge volumes of information typically contained in a GIS. These users wants access to a GIS to supplement their job description, not create a new one in having to learn an overly-complex CAD-based product. These are the very issues that Autodesk is addressing as it mounts a further push into GIS with its first release of Autodesk World.

The company is breaking new ground with World - a PC desktop-based product that is easy to learn and use, especially when compared to some of the "heavy-hitter" products, such as ESRI’s ArcInfo. Autodesk also hopes that World will help to diminish the traditional barriers between CAD/ GIS departments and other users who just want access to the same GIS data for other purposes. These barriers will hopefully be broken through the traditionally disparate groups’ ability to access and share the wealth of knowledge that can be found in a well-implemented GIS, of which World could play a big part.

With the introduction of Autodesk World, the company now has three GIS-related product lines that are not so much distinct as they are complementary to each other. The three product lines and their intended use include:

  • AutoCAD Map 2.0 - AutoCAD based mapping (see the AutoCAD R14 PRODUCT UPDATE in this issue for further details)
  • MapGuide Family - three products for Internet/intranet map publishing (see the GIS INDUSTRY UPDATE in the December 1996 A-E-C Automation Newsletter for further details)
  • Autodesk World - GIS data management and analysis.

Autodesk is quick to point out that World is not a replacement for AutoCAD Map—a product developed for CAD-based map creation and maintenance. World is a data-centric product that emphasizes GIS data management and incorporates the attribute database engine from Microsoft Access. World is also the first product released as a result of the ReGIS technology acquired by Autodesk from Automated Methods (South Africa) in 1995. Autodesk’s World developers rebuilt the product on Microsoft Foundation Classes and redesigned the user interface to make it Office ’95 compliant.

Power of GIS Analysis Found?

While the power of GIS analysis has often been touted as a way to streamline an organization’s operations, few of these businesses have truly benefited. This sad truth has occurred because, historically, even for relatively simple tasks, many GIS products have been expensive, difficult to learn and use, and available only as UNIX workstation or PC applications too large and cumbersome for use by anyone except GIS specialists.

Since World was developed specifically for the Windows-based desktop, it just may be the ticket to a relatively inexpensive GIS product for a wide spectrum of users.

Data Integration and Access

World integrates CAD and GIS into a single entity - attempting to break the long-standing difficulties of dealing with the two technologies. CAD and GIS files can be opened simultaneously and users can perform analyses between the two data types. With its unique, but familiar, Windows interface, users can access and integrate diverse forms of data that include geographic, CAD, DBMS, raster, spreadsheet, bitmap, and objects.

World lets users work with geographic-based data from many sources—competitive file formats or Autodesk’s DWG, World’s native file format. Users can access, analyze, edit, and save data in a wide variety of file formats that include ArcInfo Coverage, ArcView SHP, MapInfo MIF/MID, Atlas BNA, and MicroStation DGN—without conversion and loss of data accuracy. World’s open architecture also lets developers add virtually any other file formats.

World comes with an OLE automation application programming Interface (API), letting developers customize GIS applications. This open API lets developers use any standard programming language, including C++, Delphi, Visual C, as well as Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Also included are the Microsoft Jet Engine (the core technology found in Microsoft Access) as its internal database and Seagate Crystal Reports as the reporting package.

Requirements, Price, and Direction

Since Autodesk World is a native 32-bit application, it will run under Windows 95 or NT. Minimum system requirements are 486DX CPU, 16 MB of RAM, and 35 MB free disk space with 16 MB swap space. Autodesk World will be available at the end of May for $1,995.

GIS has already proven a good market for Autodesk, and its new products—Autodesk World and AutoCAD Map—are only making it better. Autodesk’s GIS Market Group continues to develop and offer an evermore comprehensive family of mapping and GIS products that create and maintain maps; publish, distribute, and access maps; and spatially analyze data.

Although the company wouldn’t disclose any details at press time, Autodesk promises more GIS products slated for release later this year. The company does say, however, that Autodesk World will serve as the foundation for a suite of GIS products.

Autodesk is serious about GIS and mapping. The company continues to make serious investments in GIS technology, proving that it is in this market for the long term, and its customers are beginning to realize that. For our part, we continue to be favorably impressed at the depth and breadth of Autodesk’s commitment and market strategies for the GIS marketplace.

Plus 3: Changing, But Staying On Top in 3D Modeling

With any given new year, many of the companies we follow identify new challenges and define new goals for themselves. This type of redirection is especially true for Plus 3 Software Inc. (Atlanta, GA), where 1997’s gains are likely to surpass expectations envisioned just a few months ago.

Established in 1983, Plus 3 Software has become one of the leading developers of 3D land modeling software for the civil engineering, surveying, construction, geographic information systems (GIS), and photogrammetry industries. Its flagship product, TERRA-MODEL, is known for its speed, accuracy, and design capabilities.

On the business front, in January of this year, Spectra-Physics’ Construction Instruments Group (CIG) (Chicago, IL) purchased Plus 3, quickly launching the smaller company into a bigger arena of the global marketplace. With revenues in excess of $200 million, CIG is the largest of four major business groups owned by Spectra-Physics AB, a corporation based in Stockholm, Sweden. Spectra-Physics manufacturers electro-optical instruments and equipment for a wide variety of industries.

"The combined knowledge and resources of CIG and Plus 3 will allow us to better serve the needs of our customers, prospective customers, dealers and business partners," said Derrick Darby, Plus 3’s founder and president. Atlanta will become the "center of excellence" for the companies’ worldwide application software development. It’s expected that the employees of Spectra-Physics Laserplane Paydirt operations in Dayton, Ohio will relocate to Atlanta by the end of this year. "Business at Plus 3 will remain as usual, with no interruption of service," Darby said. He will remain president of the newly combined operation.

Leveraging the Market

The acquisition by CIG leverages Plus 3’s ability to reach new customers and gives the company more financial independence. Said Darby, "This [acquisition] gives us the breadth of a multimillion dollar organization and makes us part of their overall solution package."

The companies’ products and support strategies create a natural synergy and complementary relationship, he said. TERRAMODEL, Plus 3’s flagship product, targets data acquisition, design and construction functions, whereas Spectra-Physics’ Paydirt software package concentrates on construction earthwork, takeoff (digital data gathered by surveyors), and estimating applications. The acquisition institutionalizes a long-term informal partnership between the companies and positions Plus 3 for fast growth.

"We expect to significantly increase revenues this year over 1996 figures," Darby said. "We think that’s very doable."

Darby’s predictions can’t be taken lightly. He’s committed to moving the company into the global marketplace and making TERRAMODEL and its underlying modeling engine (now packaged by the company as 3D ToolPak) part of the engineering and application development desktop for a range of companies and industries.

History Of TERRAMODEL

A realization by industry professionals in the early 1980s that land design work was moving out of the civil engineer’s hands and into those of the draftsman marked the inception of Plus 3 Software. This realization was brought about by the fact that CAD programs were designed to automate the desk of the draftsman, not the civil engineer. Even today, current CAD-based land modeling software is limited in its design capabilities since it still largely works on top of a drafting tool.

From the beginning, TERRAMODEL was developed to be a true design package that is not limited in capability by a CAD host. Its unique, point-based data structure and engine not only provide superior land modeling tools, but higher accuracy, faster production speeds, and smaller file size, as well. TERRAMODEL has over 15,000 installations worldwide. It runs under Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT, DOS, and various flavors of UNIX (Sun SPARCstation, Sun Solaris, HP9000 models 300/400/700, Silicon Graphics IRIS Indigo, Data General AViiON, and IBM RS/6000) operating systems.

Darby founded Plus 3 in 1983 when he realized the limitations of the automation tools being marketed to engineers. Darby and his team assembled an integrated 3D land modeling system intended for use throughout the life of a project. He promoted the software as being the central digital model for coordinating the efforts of multiple partners involved in any project. TERRAMODEL, with thousands of installations, has borne out those predictions and wedged itself firmly into the design/build software marketplace.

TERRAMODEL’s application design and structure is unique, emphasizes Darby. Rather than utilize a CAD model, it has a point-based structure. "We’ve designed the database and the graphics engine, and optimized it specifically for speed and performance," Darby said. "To meet the needs of ‘real world’ professionals. The approach wasn’t easy, but it’s given us a superior product for use in the surveying, photogrammetric, civil engineering, GIS and construction markets."

Being small never hurt Plus 3, but becoming part of a worldwide company will add strength to its presence. "But," said Darby, "some things can’t and shouldn’t change." Example? Derrick’s clients know him on a first name basis and they’re proud of how well software products from this small organization serve large design jobs. After all, they’ve been involved with product development all along the way, testing Derrick’s new versions and keeping him informed of what they liked, what worked, and what didn’t.

TERRAMODEL’s Loyal Following

Customers have come to rely on TERRAMODEL for helping them handle their largest and most complex projects. For Murray, Thomas & Griffin, a full-service civil engineering firm based in Texarkana, Texas, TERRAMODEL is a "reality check." Explained Robert Murray, a principal of the firm, "If you can model it in TERRAMODEL, it can be built. In simple CAD packages, you can draw anything, and they let you kid yourself that the design will work in the real world. TERRAMODEL doesn’t lie. It tells you when something can’t be done, and that’s the kind of thing an engineer needs to know. ’Can what I’m designing actually be built?’."

The firm recently used TERRAMODEL to remediate a 40-acre landfill near a residential neighborhood in Houston. This project showed how the software can be used for an entire project life. Said Murray: "We modeled the entire site, including topography and drainage. We designed a slurry wall around the site, a venting system to release the gas pressure, and created a site design to transform the former dump site into a recreational area."

TERRAMODEL is not new in the marketplace. In fact, it’s had a long run of continual growth and improvement. TERRAMODEL was first introduced as a DOS-based product, and quickly developed a loyal, albeit hard-core following, said Darby. When Windows became available, a new version of TERRAMODEL was written, using the interface as a native environment. "Windows has been a phenomenal opportunity for us to expand our share of the market," Darby explained. Because TERRAMODEL for Windows is more Windows compliant, according to Darby, than its competitors, firms continue to switch over. With all of their packages running under Windows, training and maintenance are much easier and these firms are finding that TERRAMODEL is a much more powerful solution to their engineering jobs," he added.

Over the years’ customer feedback on TERRAMODEL has prompted the company to rethink and expand its packaging and positioning. Its base application is now available in five so-called "PAKS." A wide variety of complementary optional modules are sold separately. Additionally, several ArcView applications give GIS users access to TERRAMODEL’s civil engineering designs.

"That sounds like a lot of products," admitted Darby, "But each serves a specific customer need. And not all have been kept as part of our product line," he notes. For example, a roadway product sold by the company didn’t meet the users needs as well as Plus 3 expected. "Instead of keeping that product as a separate module, we’ve improved it and incorporated it into TERRAMODEL for Windows. Now it’s a re-construction product in addition to being a construction product. But that’s what our users were asking for. Most of the roadway work being done in the marketplace is reconstruction of existing roadways. We took that feedback and built the module into a world-class roadway design and reconstruction product," Darby said.

Current engineering tool products from Plus 3 are relatively easy to use, Darby said, thanks largely to the Windows interface. But suggestions on improving the products come in regularly and, he said, and this input is continually taken into consideration as products are redesigned. "We add customer-requested features to our packages a couple of times a year," said Darby.

To support this commitment to improving products and customer service, the company has grown steadily, staffing its engineering R&D with surveyors, civil engineers, computer scientists, and product support specialists. Ron Ciccarone, vice-president of Plus 3’s Client Services, former head of the civil engineering department of McCrone Engineers (Annapolis, MD), is a prime example. He standardized McCrone on Plus 3 products and customer support is his top priority.

The success of the efforts of his team is evident in Plus 3 being named "#1 for Product Support" by POB (Point of Beginning) magazine. The results of the magazine’s annual "Surveying and Mapping Industry Study," pub-lished in the February 1997 issue, polled 2,000 active subscribers responsible for purchasing equipment or overseeing purchasing functions at leading surveying and engineering firms.

The survey rated 30 manufacturers of surveying equipment and software in the following five categories - Technological Leadership, Price Fairness, Product Support, Product Availability, and Depth of Product Line. In each category, Plus 3 Software was rated by readers within the listing’s top half, and usually within the top 10. In the Product Support category, Plus 3 rated number one, and in the survey’s "quality ratings" for surveying software, the company received an "excellent" rating from 64 percent of respondents.

TERRAPAK - integrates all aspects of land modeling, mapping, design and engineering. It contains all of the tools a civil engineer will need to perform, site, sewer, roadway, and hydrology design.

SURVEYPAK - provides the solutions a survey professional needs to quickly go from field to plat. SURVEYPAK contains drafting, report writing, mapping, COGO, geodetic survey, contouring, and CAD transfer functions.

CONSTRUCTIONPAK - allows crew standardization on a single software package for staking and layout, job site planning, tracking earthwork volumes, contouring, coordinate geometry, and engineering.

COGO Module lets users perform highly accurate graphical design and survey calculations in a fraction of the time, by combining speed and accuracy with flexibility and ease of use. COGO uses a 3-D database with unique point descriptors for all standard geometric routines.

CAD Module offers full drafting functionality, whether it’s drafting generated by a design or calculations. All attribute text is updated automatically when any design changes are made to ensure high accuracy and speed up the drafting process. The CAD Module reads and writes DXF and AutoCAD DWG files.

Contour Module generates contours much faster in TERRAMODEL than in packages that require a CAD host, due to data duplication and synchronization problems often found in CAD add-on software. Contour creates a surface or subsurface by forming a triangulated irregular network (TIN) from the original XYZ data points—which is more accurate than an interpolated grid used by many other packages.

Site Design Module offers complete and powerful surface design tools. Calculate accurate volumes without cutting cross sections, and experiment with different layouts to find the best design.

Roadway Module is a route location and design package for roads, streets, multi-lane highways, airstrips, canals, earth dams, and more.

Sewer Design and Analysis Module lets users analyze and design sanitary sewer and storm drainage quickly and with minimal effort. This module saves hours of tedious work through streamlined design and plotting features.

Hydrology Module provides storm detention studies that are simple and fast, but powerful. TERRAMODEL makes it easy and accurate by providing a single user interface and project file, multiple hydrograph calculation methods, easy-to-edit graphics, and report flexibility.

3-D View Module lets users generate, view and plot 3-D color-coded perspective views from any surface. 3-D view is also a very strong marketing tool that allows clients to see how a proposed design will actually look and fit with the surrounding landscape.

Image Manager Module is a unique module that enables users to import, view, design on, and plot raster images—even when working with large files. It also provides a backdrop for mapping, design, and land planning functions.

TERRAMODEL’s Data Capture Modules are a pair of products for manipulating data from data collection systems. GeoCap Module provides a direct, bi-directional link between TERRAMODEL and Geotronic’s Geodimeter stations. There’s no need for an additional data collection package. Raw field data can be transferred directly from the Geodimeter to a PC. Once the design or layout is completed in TERRAMODEL, data can be sent back to the instruments for stake-out. DC LINK serves as an interpreter between TERRAMODEL and a number of popular data collection systems, including TDS, Sokkia, TOPCON, and Wild. It converts raw field data from all of these sources to either an ASCII or TRV format so it can be read into TERRAMODEL.

Plus 3 Tools For ArcView bring the worlds of GIS and civil engineering together by giving ArcView users access to civil engineering, parcel mapping and land modeling tools. Civil View provides the link between ArcView GIS and TERRAMODEL civil engineering software. Use ArcView data in TERRAMODEL for 3-D modeling, surveying or civil engineering applications such as roadway, sewer, or site design. Contour for ArcView runs completely inside ArcView. ArcView Tables, DBF files, ASCII text files and ARC/INFO coverages can be used to compute a 3-D model and generate contours. Parcel Mapping for ArcView allows input of metes and bounds descriptions or digitize a plat map in TERRAMODEL to create parcel boundaries. Read in parcel polygons, bearings, distances and other attributes as ArcView themes.

Personnel With Many Talents

Additions to the sales and marketing departments during 1996 are likely to help Plus 3 reach the sales goals set forth by Darby for 1997. "These professionals have been added to Plus 3 to help us transition into being a market-driven company. We’re trying to see the needs our customers have and will have and build our products in line with what their needs and goals are and how they see their businesses changing," Darby explained.

Richard McKay was named vice-president of sales and marketing. Originally from Northern Ireland, McKay has held various managerial positions with Topometric Inc., Carl Zeiss Inc., and Vision International, a division of Autometric Inc. He is a certified photogrammetrist and member of ASPRS. At Plus 3, McKay oversees sales and marketing efforts and has developed a "defining strategy" for reorienting the company’s sales delivery system. "Our approach in the past was to sell the whole box," McKay explains. "With a complex product like TERRAMODEL, we need to customize quickly for each industry solution as we learn about the client’s needs. A new approach to selling TERRAMODEL will focus on business solutions. We will create customized modules and sell them to specific market segments."

Kurt Maynard, also joined the company last year as vice-president of Business Development. He formerly managed R&D at John E. Chance & Associates Inc., and was involved in developing the company’s OmniStar, FliMAP and TruckMAP Survey technologies. Maynard pioneered offshore surveying and is the industry’s acknowledged leader in the use of GPS for precise positioning and laser profiling. At Plus 3, he will guide product development and orientation strategies.

Looking Ahead With More Reach

As McKay sees it, TERRAMODEL already enjoys an excellent reputation as a precise mapping and land modeling product. The advantage gained by the purchase of the company by Spectra-Physics is that their software covers the front-end of the same processes. "Their package provides takeoff quantities for estimating, but to use those measurements in the field requires TERRAMODEL’s precise coordinates - so there is a natural technical fit for our products and philosophies," he said. "Now, Plus 3 occupies both ends of the process."

According to Darby, the new company will continue to support product development with its strategic partners on every front. "It will be business as usual," he said. Darby sees a future for using TERRAMODEL more closely with enabling technologies like GPS and wireless communications to have TERRAMODEL work in real time on 3D surfaces. "In no way, will the new acquisition and alliance take resources away from TERRAMODEL," added Darby.

Another market for TERRAMODEL envisioned by Darby uses a pen computer in the field to manage construction projects with real time information input and analysis. "Making engineering decisions in real time offers a huge benefit to the end user in cost savings," he said. "We’re going to arm the engineering/
surveying professional with enough data to make real-time engineering decisions in the field. That’s where I think you’ll see our product development focus continue to grow."

With so many directions to grow, customers might be thinking Plus 3 has outgrown the needs of smaller, US-based clients. "No way," said Darby. "We’ll remain specifically oriented to the civil engineering/surveying marketplace in our design products, and that allows us to stay very close to the customers and react quickly to their needs. That’s always been our strength and will remain so for the foreseeable future," he said. "We’ve grown on the outside, and realigned ourselves for even faster growth in the market. But inside we’re still committed to meeting the needs of our customers, one customer at a time.It’s an approach that works, so why change it?," he asks. "This is about winning with strong relationships and the best product and sales team in the world. We have simply expanded the vision or arena in which our product offerings fit."
